Expert Intelligence - ChatGPT Checking

The advent of AI tools and generative large language models (LLMs), such as OpenAI ChatGPT, has had a major impact on the science publishing world. Many researchers have tried using platforms such as ChatpGPT to edit or even write their research manuscripts. As a result, top scientific journals such as Nature and Science have responded with new policies, either banning the use of such tools or requiring full disclosure of their use as co-authors.

Undoubtedly, AI tools can be useful in providing superficial checks for spelling and grammar, particularly for authors who do not speak English as their first language.

However, using ChatGPT poses numerous problems to authors. Because it does not fundamentally understand your work, ChatGPT often writes "plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical" text based on what it expects such a text to read like. Moreover, ChatGPT is typically "excessively verbose and overuses certain phrases" (Source: OpenAI, openai.com/blog/chatgpt) when writing, and can greatly increase the plagiarism rate in a text. This is simply because it is modelled on previously published works.

Crucially, ChatGPT can change the meaning of your text, thus prompting rejection by journals or risking misinterpretation of your results.

To help authors avoid these dangers, we're excited to announce our new Expert Intelligence (ChatGPT Checking) service. This service is intended to provide expert reading and evaluation of research manuscripts edited by AI platforms, before identifying potential problems introduced. This includes:

  • Reading by a native English-speaker, PhD-qualified researcher who understands your field
  • Check for sentences that do not make sense, even if they are grammatically correct.
  • Check for areas where your meaning has been misconstrued or erroneously expressed.
  • Check for sentences that do not read naturally to English speakers.
  • Scan your paper for plagiarism to find out if ChatGPT has increased the rate of repetition.

After reading your paper, you will receive the following:

  • An evaluation of your paper, either approving the AI-edited draft, or recommending further work
  • A summary of up to three examples of where we found problems introduced by AI (if applicable)
  • A full iThenticate plagiarism report
  • If further work is recommended, you can claim a 20% discount on editing services from Bioedit.

Cost: $99 per paper
